When Christopher Columbus arrived on the Island, three other sets of people had already inhabited the island:

The Maroons, the Ciboneyians, and the Tainos otherwise called Arawak Indians...

    An estimated 100,000 Arawaks Indians at one time lived in Jamaica.


    Aboriginal remains show that they lived in most parts of the island. The majority of their villages were close to the coast or near rivers, as the Arawaks were sea going people and lived chiefly off seafood.
