The Doctor Bird : Jamaica's National Bird

The Hummingbird or Doctor Bird - and 26 other bird species cannot be found anywhere else other than on this beautiful Caribbean Island of Jamaica. The Doctor Birds are found only in Jamaica and is one of the most outstanding of the 320 species of hummingbirds.

It is interesting to note that the beautiful feathers of this bird have no counterpart in the entire bird population and produce iridescent colours characteristic only of that family.

The Doctor Bird has been immortalised for many decades in Jamaican folklore and songs and is still considered one of the most beautiful birds in the world.

Hummingbirds are the most skilled of all birds at hovering.

Their wings are adapted to fly as an helicopter, a circular whirl which enables them to hover, move ahead, backwards and sideways at will and with the power and force far in excess of its size.

Hummingbirds have relatively enormous breast muscles that are 30% of weight. Red colored muscles and strong elevator muscles in the breast enables the birds to raise wings so quickly and powerfully. When feathers from a wing are broken or lost, they are quickly replaced so as not to interfere with the ability of the bird to fly.
